What is SUS318 Austenitic Stainless Steel?| JM Hardware®

SUS318, also known as 1Cr18Ni12Mo2Ti, is a type of austenitic stainless steel renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, and excellent mechanical properties. It is widely used in industries that demand materials capable of withstanding harsh environments, such as chemical processing, oil and gas, marine engineering, and more. Below, we delve into the key aspects of SUS318, including its chemical composition, physical and mechanical properties, performance characteristics, and applications.

Chemical Composition

The unique properties of SUS318 are derived from its carefully balanced chemical composition. The primary elements and their content ranges are as follows:

Element Content Range

Carbon (C)    Less than 0.08%

Silicon (Si)    Less than 1.00%

Manganese (Mn)    Less than 2.00%

Sulfur (S)    Less than 0.030%

Phosphorus (P)    Less than 0.045%

Chromium (Cr)    17.00% - 20.00%

Nickel (Ni)    11.00% - 14.00%

Molybdenum (Mo)    2.00% - 3.00%

Titanium (Ti)    Less than 0.70%

Chromium (Cr): Enhances corrosion resistance by forming a passive oxide layer on the surface.

Nickel (Ni): Stabilizes the austenitic structure, improving toughness and ductility.

Molybdenum (Mo): Increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride environments.

Titanium (Ti): Prevents carbide precipitation during welding, maintaining corrosion resistance

Physical Properties

Density: Approximately 7.7 - 8.0 g/cm³, typical for austenitic stainless steels.

Melting Point: The high alloy content raises the melting point compared to pure iron, though the exact value depends on the specific composition.

Thermal Conductivity: Moderate, suitable for high-temperature applications.

Magnetic Properties: Non-magnetic in the annealed condition due to its austenitic structure.

Mechanical Properties

SUS318 exhibits excellent mechanical properties, making it suitable for demanding applications:

Tensile Strength: ≥ 785 MPa after solution heat treatment.

Yield Strength: ≥ 420 MPa, indicating strong resistance to deformation under stress.

Elongation at Break: ≥ 35%, demonstrating excellent ductility and the ability to absorb stress without brittle failure.

Hardness: Typically ranges between 150 - 200 HB (Brinell Hardness).

Performance Characteristics

Corrosion Resistance: SUS318 offers outstanding resistance to a wide range of corrosive media, including acids, alkalis, and chlorides. Its high molybdenum content makes it particularly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in environments like seawater.

Oxidation Resistance: The high chromium content forms a protective oxide layer, preventing further oxidation even at elevated temperatures.

High-Temperature Stability: Maintains mechanical strength and chemical stability at high temperatures, making it ideal for use in heat exchangers, boilers, and other high-temperature applications.

Weldability: SUS318 can be welded using common methods such as TIG, MIG, and arc welding. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required, and the welded joints retain excellent corrosion resistance.

Processing and Fabrication

Machinability: SUS318 can be machined using standard techniques, though it is harder to machine than carbon steels due to its toughness. Using appropriate cutting tools and coolants is recommended.

Formability: Excellent formability allows it to be shaped into complex geometries through cold or hot working processes.

Heat Treatment: Solution annealing at 1040 - 1120°C followed by rapid cooling is typically used to optimize its properties.

Applications

SUS318 is widely used across various industries due to its exceptional properties:

Chemical Industry: Used in reactors, storage tanks, and piping systems that handle corrosive chemicals.

Oil and Gas Industry: Ideal for valves, valve stems, and wellhead equipment exposed to harsh environments.

Marine Engineering: Suitable for offshore platforms, ship components, and desalination plants due to its resistance to seawater corrosion.

Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry: Used in equipment requiring high cleanliness and corrosion resistance, such as surgical instruments and pharmaceutical processing machinery.

Food Processing: Commonly used in food contact applications due to its non-toxic and corrosion-resistant properties.

Aerospace and Energy: Employed in high-temperature and high-pressure components, including nuclear power plant equipment.
