Split lock washers, also known as spring lock washers,  are designed with a split at one point and bent into a helical shape. This causes the washer to exert a spring force between the fastener’s head and the substrate, creating more friction and resistance to rotation.Lock washers are specially designed to keep threaded fasteners from loosening. They prevent vibrations and some have external teeth to prevent rotation. These washers are often found in airplanes and in structural applications.

Flat round washers are flat and smooth and are primarily used with bolts and nuts to provide a larger bearing surface, which distributes the load evenly over the surface area, so it isn’t damaged. They are also used to ensure that the nut is pressed against a smooth surface, which reduces the chance that it will gradually loosen.Flat Washers are circular with a center hole, are most commonly used to meet a broad range of fastening applications. They increase a nut or fastener's head bearing surface, spreading the clamping force over a bigger area. They are useful when materials are oversized, soft, or have irregular shaped holes.

Depending on the part’s shape and requirements custom machined parts might be made on a lathe, a milling machine, a stamping press, a press-brake, a precision shear, or machined on a myriad of other types of precision equipment. In many cases a custom machined part might pass through many of the operations listed before being finished. Although custom machined parts are typically more expensive than a mass-produced method, quite often the higher price is justified due to the fact that custom machined parts are generally more accurate, offer higher strength and/or integrity and can be made much faster than most other methods.
